Fishing in Oregon by Madelynne Diness Sheehan, Dan Casali (Contributor), Steve Terrill (Photographer) Paperback - 288 pages 8th Rev&up edition (January 1995) Flying Pencil Pubns; Dimensions (in inches): 0.60 x 10.85 x 8.41 If there is a body of water in Oregon with fish in it, its listed in this book. From salmon to largemouth bass, Fishing in Oregon will put you on 'em. My only complaint is with some of the directions to the locations. Unless you're fairly familiar with the area mentioned it can get a bit tricky. Though a good Oregon map pretty much makes up for any difficulty. If you live in Oregon and you fish, this book is a must. More information... |

100 Hikes in Southern Oregon by William L. Sullivan Paperback - 240 pages (April 1997) Navillus; Dimensions (in inches): 0.60 x 8.45 x 5.52 Welcome to the spectacular trails of Southern Oregon and adjacent Northern California! A Field Guide to Western Trees (Peterson Field Guides: 44) by George A. Petrides, Roger Tory Peterson Paperback 2 edition (July 1998) Houghton Mifflin Co (Pap); Dimensions (in inches): 0.90 x 7.24 x 4.49 An authoritative book that includes every tree that grows wild in western North America, including Alaska. Using the unique system of identification employed in the author's other tree books, the 387 trees of the region are divided into six major groups according to conspicuous characteristics. Within those categories, trees that look alike are brought together and compared in text and illustration, regardless of whether they are related or not. The color plates, beautifully painted by Olivia Petrides, the author's daughter and Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, emphasize details that may not be present or clearly visible in a photograph. Differences between trees that resemble each other are also listed in distinctive comparison charts. With range maps, keys, descriptions, and illustrations, the user can identify trees at any season, even when without leaves. Technical terminology is converted into plain English. The values of trees and their use by wildlife, Native Americans, and campers also are discussed. More information... |

A Field Guide to Western Birds : A Completely New Guide to Field Marks of All
Species Found in North America West of the 100th Meridian and North of Mexico by Roger Tory Peterson, Virginia Marie Peterson Hardcover 3rd edition (May 1998) Houghton Mifflin Co (Trd); Dimensions (in inches): 1.03 x 7.57 x 4.85 Often called the birdwatcher's "bible," Roger Tory Peterson's Field Guides revolutionized bird identification and started a series of books on everything from Atmosphere to Wildflowers. It is still one of the best tools for bird identification, especially for those just learning how to recognize different birds. Its text is straightforward, consistent, and well-organized, and the illustrations are unsurpassed. Taxonomic (name and species) changes will come and go, and no book is going to be able to keep up with all of them for very long. Fall birding will always be challenging, but this is still the best book to have if you only want to carry one. More information... |

National Geographic's Driving Guides to American Pacific Northwest : Oregon,
Washington and Alaska (National Geographic's Driving Guides to America) Paperback - 160 pages (March 1998) National Geographic Society; Dimensions (in inches): 0.45 x 8.49 x 5.32 If you've ever had a Kerouac-inspired desire to take to the open road but need a little formal direction, National Geographic's Driving Guides to America: Pacific Northwest will motivate you to pack the car and strike out on your journey. For each of 22 long drives in 3 states--Washington, Oregon, and Alaska--National Geographic provides the itinerary, general driving directions, and highlights of sights to visit along the way. Cruise the Denali Highway through Alaska's wild interior, get your feet wet in Washington's Hoh Rain Forest ("140 inches of annual rainfall"), or gaze at the jaw-dropping awesomeness of Oregon's Hells Canyon, "the deepest gorge in the United States." The suggested routes, which include mileage, estimated trip length, and the best time of year to travel, are perfect for planning your trek and choosing where you want to stop. Brief descriptions, complete with phone numbers and business hours of the various sites, correspond to highlighted points on the maps. Sidebars offer background and share interesting details about the sights along the mapped-out itineraries. You'll learn, for example, that the deep blue of Crater Lake "stems from the lake's exceptional clarity and depth. As light passes through clear water, it gets absorbed color by color ... Crater Lake is so deep--1,932 feet, among the deepest in the world--that every hue gets absorbed except for that radiant dark blue, which is scattered back to the surface." Complementing the text are more than 120 full-color photographs, including one of magnificent Crater Lake, which measure up to National Geographic's characteristically high standards. A full index and an appendix with contact information for motel chains and tourist boards round out the reference. Next time you get the urge to visit the rocky beaches and stunning, jagged mountains of Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, grab National Geographic's Driving Guides to America: Pacific Northwest and hit the road.
